How much electricity do your appliances use?

A friend asked me if even her flat iron uses electricity if it's plugged in, but not in use. While I was unable to find out about flat irons, I found a helpful website that explains electricity usage. Generally speaking, anything with a display will draw a charge even if it is off. Appliances that run off transformers also draw a charge. Learn more.

Thank you for pointing out Michael BlueJay's website. I'll often refer to it when I'm curious about how much energy and electricity certain items use. He is a font of e-knowledge!

I've also found some interesting websites that can help folks figure out how much energy their current appliances use--and if it's time to upgrade to a more energy-efficient one. I blogged about it here:

Our big quandary now is figuring out if it's worth investing in a new refrigerator, since it will take about three years to earn back the initial investment through energy savings.
